Commissioner Asks Karachiites Not To Dump Garbage Into Storm Water Drains:

KARACHI: Commissioner of Karachi, Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui has appealed to the Karachiites to avoid disposing off garbage and other waste material, particularly plastic bags, into storm water drains and gutters in the metropolis.Chairing a meeting yesterday to review situation in wake of rain spells and more showers as per weather forecast for the city, he said negligence towards their civic responsibilities ultimately cause inconvenience to the citizens themselves. He said overflowing gutters are usually consequent to collection of polytene bags at the mouth of the gutter lines preventing flow of waste water into major channels and sea.
These bags are non bio-degradable and are thrown by people without any consideration towards its consequences, lamented the commissioner. He said waste water that flows into drains and garbage finding no space to move further reverts with much force, particularly during monsoons, and over-floods the roads and even enter into houses located around, particularly in low lying areas. The city commissioner urged the officials to develop close linkage with citizens, particularly notables of the areas, to see that no individual or groups of people may dispose off their waster into water drains or storm water drains and make mess of situation.
